Operation Schoolhouse

Aug-15-2009 » (0) Comments

WKRG News has a nice story about Allie Maney.

When 12-year-old Allie Maney started Operation Schoolhouse, a project to collect school supplies for Iraqi children, she had no idea how large the response would be.

Since its start in October, Allie's project has more than doubled her goal of 1,000 pounds of supplies.

"I'm really excited about it. We got 2,200 pounds," the Shalimar resident said. "It's just great that we got this much and I loved doing it."

Ally started the program after hearing stories and seeing photos from her brother, Army 1st Lt. Drew Maney. In one of his weekly conversations with his family, Drew mentioned the Iraqi children he met on his tour with the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team.

According to Asbury Park Press a local VFW is holding a fundraiser this Saturday for a former 2nd SCR soldier who lost both legs in Iraq.

It looks as if Iraq War veteran Sgt. Michael Minard is more than getting by with a little help from his friends.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4247 are holding a fundraiser Saturday to help the Army veteran and Keyport native, who lost his legs in battle last year.

The event will be held at the VFW Post 4247 at Third Avenue and Waverly Street between 4 and 8 p.m.

Funds raised will be used to reconstruct Minard's home to make it more accessable for him to move around.

Chehalis Confederated Tribes

ROCHESTER, Wash., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Chehalis Confederated Tribes held a highly successful benefit dinner and theater performance for returning combat veterans at the Lucky Eagle Casino Event Center May 17th, tribal officials announced this week. The fundraising effort, appropriately named "The Return To Honor Veterans Benefit," was created to provide much needed support for the Dragoon Raiders Soldier and Family Fund and the Freedoms Foundation's Return To Honor program. Hosted by television personality Grant Goodeve, the event was attended by an enthusiastic crowd of 250 and raised over $65,000.

"We are pleased with the support and participation we received from the community," said Chehalis Tribal Chairman David Burnett. "It was our belief that people would welcome the opportunity to help charitable organizations that serve our returning combat veterans, and that proved to be the case. We are especially grateful to our key corporate sponsors, Pepsi, Wells Fargo, Uhlmann I-5 Auto Group, Reichert's Distributing and the Olympian."

The benefit featured moving speeches by Major Davina French, veteran of the Iraq War and currently the Interagency Coordination Officer for the North Dakota National Guard, Thomas K. Lee, combat veteran who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and Major Daniel Dudek, Iraq War combat veteran who served with the Stryker Combat Brigade team (4th Brigade, 2d Infantry Division).

Study Faults Charities for Veterans

Dec-15-2007 » (0) Comments

The bottom line from the following article? Do your research before making a donation to a charity organization, even if it's legit. One organization that I personally donate to is Operation Second Chance, which was founded by our friend Cindy McGrew.

By Philip Rucker, Washington Post

Americans gave millions of dollars in the past year to veterans charities designed to help troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, but several of the groups spent relatively little money on the wounded, according to a leading watchdog organization and federal tax filings.

Eight veterans charities, including some of the nation's largest, gave less than a third of the money raised to the causes they champion, far below the recommended standard, the American Institute of Philanthropy says in a report. One group passed along 1 cent for every dollar raised, the report says. Another paid its founder and his wife a combined $540,000 in compensation and benefits last year, a Washington Post analysis of tax filings showed.

The comforts of home near Madigan

The following article profiles the Fisher House facility at Ft. Lewis. I know a number of Stryker families have taken advantage of the organization's housing at Ft. Lewis and elsewhere.

MICHAEL GILBERT; The News Tribune

Like a lot of Army spouses, Sora Oakes figured she’d be better off staying back home with her family while her husband, Sgt. 1st Class Don Oakes, was in Iraq.

So when he deployed in April, she and their son Connor moved out of their quarters at Fort Lewis and in with her folks in Tennessee.

That worked fine – until Oakes got hurt Nov. 9. He suffered a badly broken leg when a wall collapsed onto him during a mission in Diyala province.

LABRADOODLE PUPPY TO HELP WOUNDED SOLDIERS

Jul-22-2006 » (0) Comments

MCMINNVILLE, OREGON, JULY 15,2006: Jeff and Vicky Fairbanks, owner of Liberty Labradoodles announces a puppy dubbed Libertys Freedom will be given to one lucky supporter of Operation Second Chance from her August litter. Vicky stated anyone donating twenty dollars or more and completes the application process could be an owner of a special multi generational Australian Labradoodle. The winner will be selected August 20th, 2006.

An adoption form and details are available online at Libertylabradoodles.com. Donations made to Operation Second Chance are tax deductible.

Jeff and Vicky have a 21 year old son currently serving in Iraq with the 172nd Stryker Brigade Infantry. I first found out about Operation Second Chance through Strykernews.com; a gathering spot for family members of Stryker Soldiers. Operation Second Chance assisted the family of a soldier in the 172nd shot by a sniper in Mosul, Iraq. I followed closely the pains, shock, and waiting for information the family faced while the injured soldier was flown to the states. Operation Second Chance was amazing during critical times such as the initial arrival of the family and their comfort. As time went on I watched them assist injured soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Center with personal visits, care packages and social activities for those able to travel.
