Correction (8/23/07): The DoD originally listed the soldier's name/rank as Pfc. Willard M. Kerchief III. On August 23, 2007 the DoD released a corrected notification that listed his legal name/rank as Cpl. Willard M. Powell. We have updated this entry to include this new information. We regret any confusion.
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Cpl. Willard M. Powell, 21, of Evansville, Ind., died Aug. 16 in Balad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when the enemy attacked using small arms fire during combat operations in Taramiyah, Iraq. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.
We would like to extend our condolences to his family, friends, and fellow soldiers.

Will,
Thank you for touching my family's life. You were a wonderful young man and I hope my boys grow up to be as wonderful as you. Thank you for always keeping the kids entertained when you came over to watch the games. You also made my wife very happy when she was able to cook for even if she did have to leave the onions out. You will be greatly missed by the Lengeman family and the football games on Sunday will never be the same.
Rest in peace.

Heaven has one more HERO to guard the Gates of Paradise. PFC Willard Harris, you have joined the ranks of our most special SOLDIERS. May you enjoy your eternal reward, as you keep watch over your brothers who are left behind. We pray that the Angels will surround your family, friends and fellow soldiers with comfort and strength. These days are so very difficult for all who knew you, but your entire Stryker family prayers for them and mourns with them. Rest in Peace, HERO.

Tears are words the heart cannot express. My heart weeps for you, for your family and friends, your fellow soldiers, and the wonderful medics who tried to save you. I have typed these words so many times, and it breaks my heart every time.
The Lord bless you, and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace."' Numbers 6:22-27

I send my sincere condolences to PFC's Kerchief's family. I just lost my nephew Brandon M Craig and so I know it is a terrible time. I don;t think my fanily will ever be the same but reading these messages really helped me. There is a poem by Khalil Gibran "The Beauty of Death" in Poetseers that made me feel a bit better. Also I felt Brandon was with God and at peace. My thoughts and prayers to his family.
