On July 25th, 2007 the Department of Defense announced the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
1st Sgt. Michael S. Curry Jr., 37, of Dania Beach, Fla., was killed July 23 in Sarobi District, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Curry was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Airborne), 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy.
Although Curry was not currently a Stryker soldier, he had a close connection to the Ft. Lewis brigades. According to a Major with the Stryker Program:
Michael Curry was the first NCOIC of the I Corps G3 Transformation cell responsible for coordinating the efforts to transform 3/2 and 1/25 into the first 2 Stryker Brigades. Unfortunately, he was killed last week in Afghanistan as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade. I would appreciate if you would post something to the site.
Godspeed 1SG Curry.

I knew Mike through the first year of OIF, we shared evenings together on Kirkuk Air Base in our little shabby rooms bullshitting as soldiers do w/ time on their hands.
After we re-deployed to Vicnenza Italy I became mike's boss as the Operations Sergeant Major of 173rd BDE; he was the S-3 Ops Sergeant of the BDE, we became good friends. I went on to become the 1SG of SETAF for OEF-6, as the Herd went to Afghanistan as well. I submitted my retirement paper work from Afghanistan and was approved to retire July 2006. After the task force redeployed back to Italy I was already in Germany working as a DoD civilian in my new career. Mike Curry and I stayed in touch; he had made his E-8, and told me all he wanted to do is his time and retire as I did.
We continued to stay in touch as the BDE re-deployed once again to Afghanistan. I received an e-mail from Mike asking me for my information I went through to retire overseas and pursue a career as a retiree in Europe; with no reservations I sent mike my complete packet to review, and told him I would meet with him where ever he wanted (Italy or Germany) to talk over the packet and have a few beers..... Mike was killed 2 weeks later.
I send my utmost sincere condolences to his family, Mike was one of the most richest Americans and Patriot I had ever knew, He was a father, a husband, a son to a proud mom and dad, and my brother.
It still hurts when I think about what mike wanted and now cannot pursue,
I know he would simply just want us to continue best we can.
Memorial day has become the most special and sensitive time in my life.
Rest in peace brother.
