The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Pfc. Charles T. Heinlein Jr., 23, of Hemlock, Mich., died July 31 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.

Words can never express how sorry I am for your loss. Charles was a true American hero and I thank him for defending my right to be free.
May God be with you in this your greatest time of need.

To the family, friends and fellow soldiers working next to PFC Charles Heinlen Jr., I pray God gives you the strength to go on without your loved one, until the day you meet again. Charles, you will always be remembered as a Hero. You served your Nation and sacrificed so much to keep your family and my family safe.
