Here's hoping for a full and speedy recovery.

If all goes well, there’s a chance Army Specialist Eric Raymond will be heading back to the United States on Tuesday.

In time for his 23rd birthday next Monday.

Raymond, a 2003 graduate of Wisner-Pilger High School, was shot in the back when his patrol was hit by enemy fire on the streets of Baghdad a week ago.
In an instant, he became one of the 26,000 soldiers and Marines who have been wounded in Iraq.

While the spotlight understandably is focused on more than 3,600 U.S. deaths in Iraq, less is known about the thousands of wounded who return home to heal or cope with lives that may be forever changed.

“I talked to him Sunday and he was scheduled to go back to (the surgical suite) this morning,” Raymond’s mother said Monday.

“He has a hole three inches in diameter in his back that they need to drain and keep clean,” Deb Raymond of Wisner said during a telephone interview.

“They’re saying he faces a minimum of three months of rehabilitation.”
