GRAFENWÖHR, Germany — Less than a year after arriving in Germany, the 2nd Cavalry (Stryker) Regiment already is on its way out of town.
Last weekend, Cav soldiers began loading the more than 300 Stryker armored personnel carriers onto trains at Grafenwöhr for the long land and sea journey to Kuwait. Final destination: Iraq.
On Wednesday, the movement was still in progress at Grafenwöhr with soldiers loading 40 Strykers from 2nd Cav’s 3rd Squadron onto trains, in a scene that is a reversal of the Strykers’ arrival in Vilseck in late July 2006.
Maj. Jon Pendell, 2nd Cav spokesman, said transport of the eight-wheeled vehicles is the first phase in the unit’s deployment.
“This is the first time we have deployed Strykers out of Europe. We had our test run when we came here. Now we are pushing the Strykers out to a combat zone,” he said.
In August, soldiers from the regiment will join the vehicles in the desert and begin the last phase of training for deployment to Iraq, he said. One of the soldiers helping load the Strykers — Sgt. Travis Bettinger, 27, of Toledo, Ohio — appeared eager to get to Iraq as soon as possible.
“It’s time to go do the job. We’ve been training long enough,” he said, adding that he expected the deployment. “I got here in August last year, and I thought we would be leaving sooner.”
Stryker driver Pfc. James Jones, 19, of Hopkinsville, Ky., was busy driving Strykers onto freight cars on Wednesday. Jones, who joined the Army in 2005, will be on his first trip downrange.
“I know I’m prepared for the worst, and I’m looking forward to it just to say I’ve done it,” he said.[...]

My son is 2nd/2nd Cav, a driver in a Stryker unit. It confuses me as to whether he is Cavalry or Infantry? Used to be 1/25..it's all greek to me. Either way, he is headed out for the first time. Is there an FRG site for them?
Keep your head down, son, and drive it like ya stole it! I love you Smilerman.

Hi to all 2nd Cav Strykers and families,
Just wanted you to know that we'll be praying for you all the time you're away - us and most of our church as well. Remember - "In time of trouble He will hide me in His pavilion" - Psalm 27:5.
We love you David!

This is a reply to Proud Stryker Mom. My son is a member of the 2/2 also. He is a scout. Who knows, maybe our sons are in the same unit. I hope this helps. The way I understand it. They are the 2nd Cavalry Regiment but are still infantry. The only thing that has changed was their name.

My name is Samantha Estes and I want to tell you all I thank you and apprechiate all your support and prayers for 2SCR. We are not widely known as other units are so this website came as a shock to me :) My husband is with 6/2 and this is our first rotation, my boys and I miss him terribly already. Hopefully it will go by quick! My husband managed to call me today and said he was told it is suppose to cool down pretty soon so hopefully they will get some relief soon. I know some of you might think this is rude to ask but I want to do everything I possibly can to help the soldiers of 2SCR...If you know any business or group that might sponsor us please let me know, maybe we can get some phone cards and care packages sent to them or maybe something more sentimental than that, who knows, there are all kinds of possibilities. I know there are a couple of the troops that are already being sponsored by someone, but I'm not sure which one, I do know 6/2 is not being sponsored. We would love to have t-shirts at least. I know it is petty but it's something small I can worry about besides other things, and I know everyone would apprechiate anything that they recieve. It amazes me how grand people can be, sending out prayers and hope to people they may never see in their lives :D Thats one thing that makes you proud to be an American!!!
I apprechiate all of you sooo much, Thank you! PROUD WIFE of EDGAR JAMES ESTES IV ~Sam

Our son, called from Kuwait yesterday and only talked briefly. He said they would be moving soon to an unnamed location and we probably would not hear from him for a couple of months. Apparently he would not have phone nor internet access for that time. We continue to pray for him and all the the other fine young men and women of our Armed Forces. God Bless them all and bring them back home safely, soon.

This is in response to Sam and anyone else who would be interested in joining our online support group of 2ndSCR soldier families. The group began when our loved ones left for Kuwait and is growing daily. The idea of trying to put together some businesses that might want to sponsor our regiment is great. One of the post offices in my neighborhood raised money on their own and mail packages to Iraq for free. What a wonderful way to help support. Maybe we can put our heads together and brainstorm some ideas. For anyone interested in joining our group just email me at;

MY wife and I heard from our son last night. He said its very hot but that the tents have AC.We would also be interested in hearing more about a sponser. We have an older son who returned last year and what we did was just send him what he wanted and then added more so he could share with his fellow soldiers.

Mom of 2/2CR Stryker RTO, Mary Kay Sales Director. While I'm not capable of being a sponsor, my unit has provided sunscreen and lip protection by matching anything anyone wants to send - we are going 100% for these guys cuz they're giving more than that. If you want to get stuff straight to the 2nd Cav, go to my website www.marykay.com/diane.webster and put 2nd Cav in the comments. I will match any and all and if you also give me your son's address, I'll send the package directly to him for distribution. If you don't specify, I'll just send it to my son in FTRP, weapons squad. Tell your guy to check with the RTO there!
Prayers for all of them. Psalm 33:20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield.

I received a call from Daniel this morning. They are at the FOB, have been mortared twice and are acclimating to the sound of gunfire, IED's exploding and mortar rounds. He sounded good and reports they are attending classes and intelligence briefings. He said only AT&T phone cards work on the system and they're really expensive to purchase there, so a good thing to send are phone cards. Internet is almost non-existent where they are so if you're waiting for email it's not likely to come soon. They have been issued new snail mail addresses, and he wasn't sure if the old ones were forwarding anymore.

2 SCR is supported by a long line of former Dragoons. We have a group where we share information, memories and other things related to the Regiment. Anyone who has an interest can join at http://groups.msn.com/DragoonBase and anyone who wishes to support the Regiment is welcome to participate.
For all the family and friends of those deployed I can tell you from personal experience there is no finer unit with which to go to war. The high standards of training and professionalism you have seen over the past months will serve your loved ones well.
