The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. Joel A. Dahl, 21, of Los Lunas, N.M., died June 23 in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and fellow soldiers during this difficult time. Please check this entry for any related articles we find.

Update: To make matters worse, the car belonging to Dahl's pregnant widow, Alia, was just stolen. In the car were personal mementos from Joel, as well as baby supplies. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's office is accepting donations to buy her a new car. You can donate by calling (505) 768-4100.

Update 6/29: Apparently the car as been recovered, but the contents are still missing. A local dealership has offered her a new car, and the sheriff's office has raised $15,000 so far. Finally, Alia gave birth to their child last night (Kaiden).

Our pain is great, but only a small portion of the pain born by his young wife and the child that he will never see. Our tears can not wash away this pain, but Almighty God can comfort and strengthen each of us as we mourn one more of our young soldiers gone on to God's Army. Know that the entire Stryker Family shares your pain. We will remember Joel Dahl as a HERO and we will keep his family, friends and fellow soldiers in our hearts and prayers for a lifetime.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Joel was a true American hero. Words can never take away the hurt that you are feeling. Always know that every member of the Stryker family is mourning you loss. We also rejoice in the birth of your son and pray that the Lord will bless you and your son in the days and years to come.

Thank You, All of you! today would have been our 2nd anniversary and it is still hard to think about what I have lost. Our baby boy is so beautiful. Somedays Kaiden looks like me but most days he's a spinning image of his father. I thank God for giving the time I got with Joel to me and giving my son to me because our son was my strength and support as well as all of you!
