SGT Robert A. Surber

The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. Robert A. Surber, 24, of Inverness, Fla. died June 3 in Thania, Iraq of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.

All of us here are deeply saddened by the loss of another Stryker soldier.

I believe we are a family, a family of Strykers and when one member of my family is in pain I suffer and cry too.

My heart felt condolences to the family, friends and brothers in arms of this brave soldier. Praying that God keeps you in the palms of his hands and gives you comfort and peace during these difficult days. You sacfrice will never be forgotten.

Words are never enough in times like these but I would like you to know that my heart breaks for you. Robert was a true American hero that gave his life so that others might be free and I thank him.
