It’s been eight months since U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Boothby was injured by a roadside improvised explosive device near Baghdad.
Two pieces of shrapnel remain lodged in Boothby’s head, and his left arm and hand still are weak. Boothby also has no left peripheral vision.
Despite that, family members said Boothby has come a long way.

Tim Boothby said doctors were cautious about Michael Boothby’s recovery, and at first they weren’t sure he would regain consciousness. When he did, doctors warned that he may never speak, and when he did speak, they warned that he may never walk again.
“He is a living, breathing and walking miracle,” Tim Boothby said.
Recently, Michael Boothby celebrated his return to Texas with friends and family at a welcome home ceremony. His movements were slow and careful, but his smile was quick and wide.
“I’m doing really good,” he said.
