Semantics are fascinating. Isn't it "reassuring" to know that 5-20 now consists of "fresh troops?" At least that's how the White House and the Pentagon described them this week when identifying them as the unit sent to Diyala. In the minds of those who fight this war from behind the bulwark of a desk in a secure and climate controlled office, "fresh" must refer to warriors whom they have assigned to a NEW LOCATION. How else could they describe those who have routinely endured fourteen hour missions, seven days a week for more than nine months as being "fresh troops?"

EVERY day My wife and I fly our flag from our front porch and hang our blue star flag in our front window. We are poud to be 5-20 parents! We are immeasurably proud of every one of them!

Little wonder then that when I hear the weariness in my son's voice, when I feel his exhaustion through his e-mails, when I read his appeals for our prayers on behalf of his soldiers' physical and personal needs, I confess, I resent the wonks in clean uniforms who euphamistically describe 5-20 as being "fresh" troops.

Wouldn't it be refreshing if, with the ever-increasing need for more bodies to satisfy the requirements for "boots on the ground" to accomplish the planned "surge," maybe the "brave" warriors in the Pentagon will finally get their chance to PERSONALY fight this war IN Iraq instead of from the climate controlled, IED-free and sniper-free zone of the Pentagon. Maybe then our loved ones in 5-20 will be redeployed home ON SCHEDULE. THEY have certainly EARNED that right!
