YAKIMA -- The Army will hold a public meeting Friday to discuss the possibility of basing a Stryker brigade at the Yakima Training Center.
The meeting, which will discuss the scope of the potential change and impacts the military should consider, does not mean that the new brigade would necessarily come to the training center, where the other Stryker brigades sometimes practice manuevers.
The Army must hold the meeting as part of the environmental planning process for its preferred site in Hawaii, where the light infantry brigade targeted for the Stryker switch is already located.
As part of a branchwide conversion, the Department of Defense wants to convert all Army light infantry units to Stryker brigades, which are designed to be ready to roll in four days.
A judge required the additional environmental review after native groups in Hawaii raised concerns about damage that the 19-ton Strykers might do. The armored combat vehicles are designed to move more quickly than traditional tanks.
The Army has said it is also considering sites at Fort Lewis, Colorado, Alaska and Kentucky.
