Army Staff Sgt. James Jeane calls himself “blessed.”

Jeane’s wife, Sunshine, frequently refers to her spouse as “My miracle husband.”

The blast disabled the Stryker, blowing out its tires. Jeane, who was standing in the right rear air guard hatch, was hit with shrapnel on the side of his head. A couple of other soldiers in the Stryker escaped the blast with superficial wounds.

Jeane attributes his full recovery to a higher power — “God.”

Sunshine concurs. “He is a walking medical and military miracle. I call him my miracle because there is no other explanation than that God intervened for him. I had everybody praying for him.”

Today, Jeane is back on full-time duty at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, teaching trauma management on the battlefield to mid-level, non-commissioned officers.

“I know a little bit about it,” said Jeane in his usual understated way. [...]
