A 21-year-old Cuyahoga Falls soldier wounded in a roadside bombing in Iraq on Dec. 3 expects that President Bush will visit him this week at his hospital room in Washington, D.C.
Adam P. Poppenhouse, who became a father while in Iraq, lost his right leg above the knee in the explosion. Doctors are working to save his left leg below the knee, said his mother, Kim Poppenhouse of Cuyahoga Falls.
In addition to Poppenhouse's leg injuries, his left arm and wrist were broken, his mother said.
``It will be a long-haul struggle,'' she said. ``He is very lucky to be alive -- the grace of God.''
The soldier's wife, Amanda Poppenhouse, gave birth to the couple's first child, daughter Rylee, on Aug. 28 at Fort Lewis, Wash.
After Poppenhouse was wounded, the Army flew his wife, daughter, mother and father to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to be with him.
President Bush is scheduled to visit the soldiers Friday at Walter Reed, Kim Poppenhouse said.
Adam Poppenhouse, who is classified as a specialist (promotable), had passed the Army's sergeant review board and was working to get enough points for promotion to sergeant when he was wounded, his mother said.
He entered the Army after graduating from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 2003 and was on his first tour of duty in Iraq when he was wounded.
He served with the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division -- the Stryker Brigade Combat Team.
Kim Poppenhouse said she wants the public to be aware of the vast number of men and women who, like her son, have been severely wounded in the war and are being treated at places such as Walter Reed. These men and women have great strength and need support, she said.
``They did this for us,'' she said. ``We need to continue to stand by them.... Their whole life is altered. People need to know about them.''...
