Staff Sgt. Moises Martinez, with 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, will receive the Soldier’s Medal from Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey during a ceremony Wednesday at Fort Lewis, Wash., according to an Army press release.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Battle Command Training Center on post.

According to Army Regulation 600-8-22, the Soldier’s Medal is awarded for acts of heroism that don’t involve conflict with an enemy. The same degree of heroism required to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross is required for the Soldier’s Medal, and the recipient must have been in personal danger, according to the regulation.

The medal will honor Martinez -- who received an honorable mention in the 2006 Army Times Soldier of the Year program -- for his actions during a November 2005 shooting at the Tacoma Mall in Washington.
