Rest of Strykers to move to Baghdad

Fort Lewis soldiers stationed in Mosul are headed south to join their Stryker comrades working in the embattled Iraqi capital, a news service reported Wednesday.

Citing unnamed Pentagon sources, The Associated Press reported that the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division would be leaving Mosul as part of the U.S. military’s plans to beef up its presence in Baghdad.

About 1,500 3rd Brigade soldiers have been operating in Baghdad since the unit left Fort Lewis last June for its second deployment in Iraq, scheduled to last a year.

The move reported Wednesday would apparently reunite the brigade headquarters and its remaining 2,500 soldiers with the units in the capital.

A brigade spokesman, Maj. Rob Parke, declined to respond to inquiries earlier this month from The News Tribune about reports that troops were moving out of Mosul to Baghdad. He couldn’t be reached Wednesday. [...]
