Soldiers learn art of homemaking at war

BAGHDAD, iraq – Fort Lewis soldiers fighting in Iraq’s capital can get Popeye’s Chicken when they return to base, followed by Cinnabon for dessert. Taco Bell is coming soon. But finding Internet access to drop Mom a message is a different story.

The 1st Battalion of the 23rd Infantry Regiment’s life at Camp Liberty has some drawbacks not faced by Fort Lewis soldiers living elsewhere in Iraq. Most of the roughly 600 soldiers in this battalion live in tents with 25 or more guys, instead of the two-man trailers their Stryker brigade comrades are enjoying up north in Mosul.

Group life has its shortcomings. People living in the same tent go out on missions at different times of day and night. It seems like some soldier is always coming into the tent, taking off battle gear or playing a video game after a mission, while others are trying to sleep.[...]
