The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who
was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Cpl. Casey L. Mellen, 21, of Huachuca City, Ariz., died on Sept. 25 in Balad, Iraq, of injuries suffered when his mounted patrol came in
contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq. Mellen was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash.

Tough to know what to say at a time like this... Casey will be missed by so many - including those serving with him in Iraq. My son (BH) is with the 5/20 3/2 Bco and I know that his loss will be felt by all those who worked along with him. Prayers go out to Casey's family, friends, and all those serving in Iraq. God Bless...
My son is in Casey's unit; although he did not know him personally, he was still upset about the loss.
I am a Christian. I believe you WILL see him again. I don't know how much comfort that brings you. I only know it would comfort me, and that I hope I never have to find that out for sure.
I am praying for you, his family.
I also pray every day for my son's safety, and for his unit, and for all our soldiers there.
Once again we, the families of the 3/2 Stryker Brigade, have lost another member. It is never easy nor are there ever enough words to say how much we are grieving with you. My son is with the unit that is in Baghdad.
Casey is a hero. He chose to do a most honorable thing and now he is with the Lord, although way too soon. Please know that my prayers are with you and know that you are in my thoughts.
With all our hearts, all of us who know the fear of having a child there in Iraq, all of us who have signed into this site... we all offer to you what little we can give: our sympathy, our comfort, and our prayers for your beloved child! With these, we thank you for raising such a fine son that he would voluntaily risk his life to protect ours. Thank you and God Bless You! -Matthewsmom
Casey,
Today we pray for you and your family while thanking you for your great heroism in the name of freedom. Tomorrow we begin the task of honoring your life by remaining steadfast in support of your brothers that continue the fight in Iraq. May God bless the Mellen family.
The Mellen family remain in our hearts and prayers. We attended the services for Casey today and they were a beautiful tribute to our "Hometown Hero". For every tear that falls from your eyes, there's a prayer in our hearts. We all owe so much gratitude to Casey and all the soldiers who have given the Ultimate Sacrifice of their lives for our freedom. Even with his greatest of losses, Casey's Father told me he will keep our son John, serving in Baghdad with the 172nd, in his prayers, as he does all our troops. God Bless all of you in this saddest of times and always. The Mellen's are a very special family and we are honored to know them. As blessed as you are to have a son like Casey, he is equally blessed to have you and I know he's smiling down on you with love and he knows how very, very proud you and everyone is of him and we all thank him from the bottom of our hearts for his dedication and love of his country. We will always remember him as our "Hometown Hero".
