Iraqi Troops Hinder U.S. Efforts

The following article mentions the 4-14 CAV, 172nd SBCT.

Associated Press - September 25, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The plan was simple: Iraqi troops would block escape routes while U.S. Soldiers searched for weapons house-by-house. But the Iraqi troops didn't show up on time.

When they finally did appear, the Iraqis ignored U.S. orders and let dozens of cars pass through checkpoints in eastern Baghdad - including an ambulance full of armed militiamen, American Soldiers said in recent interviews.

It wasn't an isolated incident, they added.

Senior U.S. commanders have hailed the performance of Iraqi troops in the crackdown on militias and insurgents in Baghdad. But some U.S. Soldiers say the Iraqis serving alongside them are among the worst they've ever seen - seeming more loyal to militias than the government.

That raises doubts whether the Iraqis can maintain order once the security operation is over and the Americans have left. It also raises broader questions about the training, reliability and loyalty of Iraqi troops - who must be competent, U.S. officials say, before America can begin pulling out of Iraq.

Last week, for example, Sgt. 1st Class Eric Sheehan could barely contain his frustration when he discovered that barriers and concertina wire that were supposed to bolster defensive positions had been dragged away - again - under the noses of nearby Iraqi soldiers.

"(I) suggest we fire these IAs and get them out of the way," Sheehan, of Jennerstown, Pa., reported to senior officers, referring to Iraqi army troops. "There's nothing we can do," came the reply.

U.S. Soldiers from the 4th Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment eventually blocked the road again while Iraqi troops watched from a distance.

Some Americans speculated the missing barriers were dragged off to strengthen militia defenses in nearby Sadr City, a sprawling Shiite neighborhood that is a stronghold of anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

"They've been doing this all week. They're working against us," said Sheehan, who resorted to waking up the senior Iraqi officer at the checkpoint to complain - futilely.

During another mission, Iraqi soldiers were suspected of looting the house of a wealthy resident, U.S. troops said.

Some Americans said they had seen much better Iraqi troops in the northern cities of Mosul and Tal Afar, which have more Kurdish soldiers. They have been disappointed by the performance of units committed to the Baghdad fight.

U.S. officers believe the problem has political and sectarian roots: Many of the Iraqi soldiers here are Shiites recruited from the Baghdad area.

Why is it the only news is coming out of Baghdad? You'd think there are no soldiers anywhere else!

Why is it the only Stryker news is for 172nd?

More on Mosul!

More on 5/20th IN, 3-2 !

I think there should be more stryker news out of mosul.

I agree

Thats got to be beyond frustrating for those soldiers. This seems to be a theme for the Iraqi army, though. Why aren't senior military personel going directly to the problem and getting some results? If that was our guys, they'd get their a*%es handed to them, no questions asked. Not to sound repetitive, but I'd also like to have more news from the north, particularly Mosul.

My soldier is in Baghdad, so I have been enjoying the latest coverage. Though, if it were the other way around, I would feel the same way, so maybe it should be equal coverage. :)

Why isn't the media picking this up and letting the US leaders see what crap our kids are putting up with?
God helps those who help themselves...

I think it's about time that the Strykers are getting the recognition that they deserve. After all they did put Mosul is a restive moment. And now they are in Bagdad to try to help the other soldiers there bring some order to the city. My Son David is a Stryker and I know the 172nd. Stryker Brigade 17th BN 1st. Inf Regt is doing a wonderful job. They have spent there time over there and Lord willing they will be home before Christmas. This is hard on their families here in the states but we need to know that it is harder on our soldiers over there. We have nothing at all to complain about because we have security because of our fighting forces. I feel that we need to keep praying for their safe return and quit griping about whats going on. And as far as some people complaining about the receognition that the Strykers are getting now. I say hooray and it's about time they are noticed.

Matthewsmom - This was an AP article, so the media are picking up on this.

I use to wait to hear news when our guys where in Mosul and all we would read about is the groups in Baghdad now ours sons are their it’s good we finally hear about our sons and it good since they are going on their 14 months of being their. But I am concerned about the Iraq’s not being were they are suppose to be on a mission or more so they are not stopping the insurgents. Our guys can’t due this alone.

I KNOW THE FRUSTRATION WHEN YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER, HUSBAND OR WIFE IS IN ANOTHER AREA OF IRAQ AND NOT GETTING THE MEDIA ATTENTION IT SO DESERVES, FOR MY 172ND STRYKER MEDIC WAS BASED IN RAHWAH (DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS A PLACE, HUH?) AND ALL I HEARD WAS THE STRYKERS IN MOSUL. BUT NOW THANKS TO OUR WONDERFUL MILITARY COMMANDER (WHOEVER THAT IS) ALL THE 172ND STRYKERS WERE TAKEN FROM ALL OVER IRAQ, GIVEN AN 120 DAYS EXTENTION, AND MOVED THEM INTO BAGHDAD. YEAH I'M GLAD TO HEAR ALL THE MEDIA ON THEM BECAUSE IT'S SO BAD THERE YOU JUST WANT TO HEAR SOMETHING EVERYDAY. THEY ARE LOSING MEN THAT SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN HOME SO BEAR WITH US(THE FAMILIES OF THE 172ND STRYKERS)FOR WE ALL ARE IN NEED OF SLEEP, WE'RE MAD, WE'RE WORRIED, ( AS I KNOW THE REST OF YOU ARE) AN IT'S BEEN LONGER THAN WE THOUGHT. NOW TO THE ARTICLE "IRAQI TROOPS HINDER US EFFORTS",WHY, WHY. THE VERY THOUGHT THAT OUR MEN AND WOMEN ARE OVER THERE WITH MEN WHO ARE NOT WILLING TO SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS, AND WE ARE TRAINING THEM, IS UNBELEIVABLE. HISTORY CONTINUES TO REPAET ITSLF. WE HAVE ALWAYS WENT IN AND TRAINED COUNTRIES TO DEFEND THEMSELVES, TO HAVE THEM TURN ON US. WE HAVE FOUGHT BESIDE OUR ALLIES TO HAVE THEM TURN ON US. SO WHY ARE WE ASKED TO FIGHT ALONG SIDE MEN WE CANNOT TRUST. OUR GOVERNMENT HAS ALWAYS TURNED A BLIND EYE WHEN IT COMES TO PUTTING OUR MILITARY FAR AND AWAY FROM HOME, TO HAVE THE ONES WE ARE FIGHTING FOR REFUSE TO GIVE EVEN HALF WHAT WE GIVE FOR THEM. WASHINGTON NEEDS TO QUIT FIGHTING THIS WAR FROM BEHIND THEIR DESK, AND WE NEED COMMANDERS IN THE FIELD, THAT INSIST THEY GET WHAT THEY NEED TO WIN THIS WAR, EVEN IF IT'S TO START THE DRAFT. WE NEED TO QUIT FEEDING THE WORLD AND TAKE THE MONEY TO GET OUR MILITARY HOME. WE NEED TO TELL THE UN TO SHOVE IT FOR EVEN LETING LEADERS OF OTHER COUNTRIES COME INTO OUR BELOVED USA AND TALK THE WAY THEY DID OF OUR PRESIDENT, YOU KNOW IT'S LIKE OUR CHILDREN, WE CAN TALK ABOUT THEM BUT NOBODY ELSE CAN. THESE SO-CALLED SENATORS, REPRESENTATIVES, AND ANY OTHER GROUP WHO THINK THEY CAN ARGUE OVER HOW OUR MILIARY, CIA, OR FBI CAN HANDLE INTELLIGENCE OR INTERROGATIONS IS UNTHINKABLE. LET'S GET THE JOB DONE WITH SUCCESS WHATEVER IT TAKES AND BRING ALL OUR BELOVED MILITARY HOME.

The 172nd is in the news because the unit has become a political "hot potato". Both side will use the holdover deployment to their advantage; those that are against the war will exploite the families that complain, those supporting the effort will quote the families verbalizing support. It is politics.
May God keep all our sons and daughters safe!

Joes' Stryker Mom (172nd)

It is really important that we keep perspective here. This discussion of Mosul v. Baghdad, and who is getting more site focus is not constructive. People, we are on the same side here! Stop fighting with one another. You feel frustrated? We all do, so let's not take it out on each other! Focus your energy instead that your relative is likely still alive. Then, click on "Tribute to Fallen Soldiers" on the right side of this screen, regain your prespective as to whom the enemy is, and write a kind note to those that are grieving instead of writing nasty notes on this site. United!

I totally agree with BigSis, Please, ladies and gentlemen, LET'S STAY FOCUSED. We all want news about our son's or daughters, but let's not worry about the AP news or CNN, FOX, Newsweek, Time, local/national papers, etc.... Please leave that to your soldier to tell you. We are all UNITED here. Who cares about who gets the most news coverage!!!! Let's act like mature adults and quit bickering over something so petty!!!!!!!

To be honest your comments about all the news the 172nd is getting bother me. This is Strykernews. That means all the Stryker units news is posted. If your family member's unit doesnt have any news reported you have to wait until there is something to report. Our troops are dealing with so much being over there. Lets not turn this into a popularity contest.
Proudly supporting ALL Strykers,
Strvnmrvn's

Stop whining about not hearing about the 3-2. When the 3-2 havs been extended and moved to Baghdad like the 172nd, then they can get in the news more often.

No news is good news for myself and family..So many times what we see in the media is negative anyway and NEVER seems to reflect what my Husband sees and experiences. He must be the minority in positive affects he sees daily. It is all so confusing! God Speed to All Our Stryker Brigades!
