With permission we are sharing the following note written by a soldier with 1-17 IN, 172nd SBCT. Given that this is such a stressful time, and many of you may still be waiting to hear from your soldier, I thought his words would provide some comfort.
*****
Greetings everyone,
We are definately heading out, but our final destination is still unknown. We have a very specific, specialized mission while we are down there, and when it is complete, we will pack up and go home. We are looking at 90-180 days, but more specific time will only be determined by the progress of our mission.
This is the most important thing we will be doing since coming to Iraq, for our soldiers, for the people in Iraq in general, as well as the overall success of the entire "Operation Iraqi Freedom" campaign.
There were reasons why the 172nd was chosen for this, and as angry or upset as you might be about your soldier not coming home, just know they were chosen for their ability to get the job done.

I'm proud of what my son and the others or the 172nd have accomplished while in Iraq. I also feel that they have served thier time and it's time to send them home to thier loved ones. Where are all the magnificent Iraqi troops that we have been training for the last almost 4 years now. We train our soldiers in as little as 18 weeks then send them to the front. I think we put them in Bagdad and let them do the job. We stay on the outside and mop up. Surely, if they are truly loyal to the Iraqi government and want to protect thier homeland they will prove themselves able to take back their capital without our help.
as a seasoned infantry wife i'm acustomed to change at the last minute. while although i was caught off guard by the last minute extension as much of the rest of us i was not much surprised. many emotions and decisions have to be faced but it will be done and we will survive just as we have for the last 12 months. i am so proud of our soldiers who have taken the news in stride and are still holding steadfast to the mission at hand. i am proud of our children for being so understanding and willing to share their parent to the cause of freedom. i am proud of the spouses who will stand strong for their soldiers and children and for each other. we all work as a family. so this means more nights of uno, scrambling to see whos phone it is that's ringing. sharing dinners on front porches and lending shoulders to lean on. sending all our best wishes and strong game faces to the soldiers when they call and shedding a couple tears once the call ends. i have no doubt we will make it through. we all have a job to do as i see it. whether it be on the battlefield or on the homefront. we have all done tremedously so far and will continue to do what needs to be done. thanks to all the well wishes everyone has sent and thanks for the continued prayers. the best and brightest of love and energy to our men and women in service to their country!

God be with all the troops and keep them safe.
If they were choosen for thier skill then believe in that skill, even if it breaks our hearts.
