"Pen pals teach third-graders about friendships and giving."
BY LAUREN WILLIAMSON, Record Staff Writer
LONG VIEW -- Jaleel Ussery shuffles through his desk in Christine Brock’s third-grade class at Longview Elementary.
He tosses aside crayons, loose sheets of paper and his textbook. After a few minutes of shuffling, his scowl transforms into a grin.
“Here are the cards my soldier wrote to me,” Ussery said. “He even sent me some pictures.”
Ussery, 9, and his 14 classmates in Brock’s class adopted soldiers from the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team in Fort Wainwright, Alaska, as their pen pals. The unit is currently stationed in Mosul, Iraq.
Once a month, Brock gives the students 45 minutes to write letters or make cards to send to their soldiers.
On Thursday, stacks of red and pink construction paper, cut-out hearts and glitter pens lined the students’ desks. It was time to make Valentine cards for their pen pals.
