He's coming home

Nov- 6-2005 » Filed Under: Michael Oreskovic

Greetings everyone. Well, after a very long year in Iraq and an even longer thirteen months at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, my son is on his way home. YIPPEEEEEE

We got the call a few days ago and since the Army did not process his extension in a timely manner, they decided to finalize his paperwork and get him on the next available flight to Oregon. God bless the bureauracrat that shuffled the paperwork. :-) Needless to say it was a very emotional moment for Michael, taking off his uniform for the last time and packing it away. He is officially a civilian again, with many new challenges ahead of him. I know he will do well.

I would like to thank everyone for all their thoughts and prayers during these past thirteen months. From the smallest donation to the largest get well card, it is all very much appreciated by me and my family. I would also like to thank Todd for bringing me into the fold and taking a proactive role immediately after our bad news that October day. He is truly my hero for giving me the words of encouragement when I needed them. I would also like to thank Peggy Baker and her husband Steve, Operationfirstresponse.org, for all their assistance during our time in DC. Her organization is truly a blessing to us family members. I do not know what we would have done without such caring people. (Granted, there are a number of great organizations out there, but Peggy and her group are in my top two bestest in the world rankings) :-) And who is the other one you say? Well, Cindy McGrew from operationsecondchance.org was by our son's side since the day he got to Walter Reed. The personal attention this wonderful lady gives to our military is a joy to see. May God bless them all for what they do, it is truly amazing the energy they show each and every day.

It looks like Michael will be settling in for a while, getting set up locally with the VA for his prosthetic work. Probably trips to Portland from time to time. I think he plans on going back to school in January, taking it slow and easy for the first few terms. He is still weighing his options on what to do next, so no news in that regard. I know whatever he decides to do, he will do well.

His mom and sister have been running around all day getting ready for the big event. ;-) They have not seen him since January so I am going to let them have first hugs. (I am such a good person) LOL. We got his room painted and a new bed all set up, no cable in there though, so I guess his TV will have to stay in my room. :-)

I rode in the Veteran's day parade in our town today and hope to make the one in Albany on Friday. Michael may be heading up there with the family for the event. My cousin and her family, along with their scout troop, had a float last year honoring Michael and some other soldiers who had been wounded in Iraq and we hope to get up there to thank them this year. It sure is a grand site to see all the people show up to honor the veterans and those services that serve us all. May God bless and keep them safe.

Well, that is about all for now. I must apologize for not being more persistant in my writings lately. Let's just say it has been a rough year and leave it at that. :-) Thanks again to everyone, it has been an honor to have known you all, even when mostly online, but I will not disappear and hopefully, I will be back to my old self helping with the site and chiming in from time to time.

Most Respectfully yours,
Michael Oreskovic

Mike, it is so good to hear from you again. And while it is bittersweet for Michael, I know that your family will be so thrilled to have him back in the fold. I am sure your wife and daughter can't wait to spoil him rotten for a while. We are all so proud of Michael, and thank him for his service and his sacrifice. May God grant him peace and a fruitful life as a civilian. Please stay around and keep us posted on his progress. Michael and your entire family are in our hearts and prayers forever. Godspeed in his journey home.

Well Michael....you will be joing a much wider spectrum of ranks...being a civilian again. But I have no doubt from reading of your recovery that you will find yourself AT THE TOP of the ranks in no time at all. I hope and pray that the fine city of EUGENE opens up their arms and gives you the welcome home you deserve. And if they don't...head over the Springfield....those folks are ALWAYS behind a good hero!!! :) Hey....what can I say....I'm from Springfield. You have been in many of our prayers to this point..and that won't stop now. Enjoy being with your family and friends...and know that you will be thought of for years and years to come. God bless you and yours.

Debbie

Well... I have to say I read your post with tears running down my face. Michael, this has been so personal for so long... you have been in my prayers and I have shared your ups and downs with great anticipation. I am so proud of you, and though we have not met, I feel as if I do know you. I will keep you in my prayers as you work your way back into civilian life. I know that this is not the road you would have chosen...but God obviously has bigger and better plans for you. It will be good. Mike... you and your wife and daughter have every reason to be so proud! Its good to know that you are finally rejoicing in the homecoming that was taken away from you... we are so happy for you!!! WOOHOO!

Michael- Thank you for this journey, I know you have got to be so proud as we all are of Michael and please thank him for all he has done for those of us bck home. I wish him the best in his transition back to civilian life, he will be great at whatever he chooses. May life be sweet for he and his family they deserve the best!!!! Please I hope you will continue to keep us in the loop from time to time. May God bless all of you!

God bless Micheal and your family. We just watched the cspan interview again. We saw it a few months ago too. Micheal is inspiring. He is a good example for my boys who watched the interview with us. Perhaps our county has great hope if we are raising sons like yours.

Michael -- I just saw a re-run of your C-SPAN interview, which I actually saw earlier this year also. I wanted to find a way to communicate with you and let you know that I said a prayer then for you, and will do so again today.

Your story is compelling. I hope that you can keep your enthusiastic approach to things, as I know they get hard.

Someone out there cares, and is praying for you AND your family. Please let us know how things are going, and in the meantime you are more than welcome to drop a line if you need to talk. I apprecieate your sacrifice.

Just watched CPL Michael Oreskovic on C-span. Reminds me of my good friend Jeremy W. who went into the marines a few years back, so that helped a lot since I haven't talked to him in a while. They even look a lot alike.
I have to say Michael was very impressive, and looked like solid gold on the C-Span show. He should be very proud of himself, heck I'm proud of him already and just watched the show for 30 minutes.
I noted the C-span interviewer was well aware of his skills in communicating, mentioning how many would see him as very articulate for 23 years old.
Oh, it's better than that, he is very articulate for any age. When he mentioned he always tried hard to be the best there is no doubt it has paid off.
I'm glad there's common sense and truth coming over the air waves and the internet from our military vets. That was really a great interview.
One more thing I'd like to say.
Someone mentioned kindly they hope Michael gets well soon.
I have to say, he's already way better than a large amount of the general population (mentally -personality-wise, etc), and as far as getting well, I mean he already IS.
I'm jealous of anyone who is Michael's friend.
Have a good one.

Michael(jr)??
I see I'm late to the party. I just saw you on cspan2 and I immediately called walter reed to see if I could get an email address or a mailing address for you.

I wanted to see how you were getting along and to say I was never more proud to be an american then I was watching you and what you had to say.

I hope you run for political office some day and I hope that along the way you dont' change from the person you are.

As an ex soldier(different era), I'm not very comfortable with this current war because I'm not sure that what the government says about the official reason for this war and what some of the key people behind the war are actually doing bothers me.

When I was in the military I held a top secret position and had access to information that made me very skeptical from the start about the reasons for this war.

I certainly did not want to send americans in to harms way for something that was so murky.

Having said that though, I wanted to tell you that as you spoke up for what you beleived and why you were there I was so proud of you I was about to burst. I think many of the men and women in the armed service beleive as you do and thats why they are there.

If I felt the war was being fought for the reasons you gave I would be 100% behind the war. I wanted you to know that even though I'm not for the war I think you are the best of what america is about. I appreciated your compassion and the sacrifice you made and the fierce determination you show to get on with your life. I wanted to tell you not to take it personally that some people are against the war. It doesn't take away one bit from the heroism of your personal sacrifice and the sacrifice of others in our armed forces. I am so glad to know there are people like you. I am just angry that the government is willing to spend your life and others so carelessly. I think you deserve the best because you gave the best.

I am 100% behind you personally. If there is anything I can do besides prayers and good wishes please let me know.

I hope you will write here occasionally to let all of us know how you are doing.

I started to say I expect great things from you. But in retrospect I think I will say that you have already done a great thing with your life, and that your leadership and passion matter.

May God Bless and Keep you and your family.

Dear Michael,
My husband and I watched your interview on C-Span last weekend and were incredibly moved. You are an articulate, well spoken young man. We were both so impressed with your maturity, dignity and command of your current situation.

Words cannot express our sorrow for your loss. We would both like to thank you for your courage and for being willing to fight to protect the United State of America.

You are a hero and a roll model. We will pray for your continued recovery.

Thank you.
