Monika Hammon was watching CNN one day when she was struck by a report about wounded soldiers coming home from overseas.
So Hammon decided to do something to show her appreciation for their sacrifice. Over the last several months, she’s donated 50 backpacks full of goodies to soldiers recuperating at Madigan Army Medical Center. And she’s planning to give a lot more.
Each backpack contains toiletries such as toothpaste, shaving cream and shampoo, but also games, clothing and a box of Girl Scout cookies. She solicited donations from veterans’ organizations, other groups and individuals to pay for the gifts. She delivered the backpacks to Madigan’s Air Evacuation Unit and met two of the soldiers who benefitted from her thoughtfulness. [...]
