The Army today officially announced its realignment plans, which will affect many of the Stryker Brigade Combat Teams (SBCTs). Some of the information released is confusing, and conflicting, but we've provided all the links below so you can read the source documents yourselves.
According to the Pentagon, the realignment will result in 3 SBCTs stationed at Ft. Lewis, each of which will be part of the 2nd Infantry Division. The 2nd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division will be tranformed into a SBCT, and be stationed at Schofield in Hawaii. The 172nd SBCT will return to Alaska following its upcoming deployment and be reflagged as a SBCT of the 25th Infantry Division. Finally, according to Special Assistant to The Secetary of the Army, Ray Bubois, the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division:
will come back to Fort Lewis. The complexity of this is, as it comes back we will refit it, reset it. And the aggregation of the Stryker population here, in June of '06 we will move this organization lock, stock and barrel, and it will come over here [to Germany] and reflag itself as the 2nd Cav Regiment to replace the 3/1 out of 1st Infantry Division and start setting ourselves up for the final footprint in Europe.
Overall there will be 6 active duty SBCTs and 1 reserve SBCT (based in PA) for a total of 7. Please feel free to post any clarifications in the comments section.

Comments For "Army Announces Repositioning Plans":
So does that mean the 1/25 of Ft. Lewis will go to Germany in June after the deployment, and will then be called 2nd. Cav? Or is 2nd. Cav. that just got to Ft. Lewis going to Germany and being "re-flagged" as 2nd. Cav.? Very confusing.

From reading the press conference, it looks like the briefing was confusing his brigades in the 25th ID. However, he specifically refers to SBCT-2 (which is 1/25 ID) as returning from Iraq, refitting, resetting (which means that for a brief period, the stabilization will be lifted and soldiers will PCS out and in - how much this will be, I couldn's answer), and then moving SBCT-2 to Germany (I believe Vilsek, which is the garrison at the southern edge of Grafenwoehr Training Area in Bavaria and about 2 hours northeast of Munich) and reflagging it as 2nd ACR.

1/25 will be leaving in June 06 and heading to Germany. Most personnel assigned will PCS with it for a normal European tour. (2-3yrs) There will only be 2 Stryker Brigades at Ft. Lewis when the dust settles. A third one will come from somewhere else.

Yeah, the whole 2CR thing is confusing. I would just sorta like to know if i'm staying 2CR or if I'm going indianhead.

I do know that 1/25th is being transfered to Germany in June of '06, and that we are going to Vilseck, at least that's what we were told at the FRG meeting 2 weeks ago.

What about 1/23?

Why must this be so confusing? We have official word, but the guy was so confusing with his statements that I had to look his words up in the dictionary. "Aggregation" means most of; sum of; total of. "Re-flag" means rename. So according to the statement, 1/25 will come back here and get ready to go to Germany, where they will be "re-named" 2nd. Cav. The other strykers left here will be "re-flagged/re-named" to all be Arrowheads. This is so frustrationg, I mean, wouldn't my husband's SSG know if they are going to Germany or not? Don't they have meetings about this stuff? What is going on here? Hopefully someone who really knows can explain...

Well, it was confirmed on the post paper today; it'll be 1/25 going to Germany! I am so happy about this. Ft. Lewis is a great post, but I think I could give it up for Vilseck!! It is so beautiful there! I'm glad we can make a huge move like that w/ our friends. The Pentagon made a very good choice!

We are stationed at Schofield Barracks.. It has been rumored in recent days that there will be no Stryker unit coming to Hawaii despite the reports. I am curious if maybe we will make up the 3rd Styker unit that will be stationed in Washington after they leave for Germany? I would love to hear what anyone else thinks.

I agree it is confusing. The soldiers are being given a wish list... with a couple of options. To stay at Fort Lewis, PCS to a different location (needs of the Army) or go to Germany with the 1st BDE, which will then be called 2nd CR. If a soldier has an ETS of OCT 06 he/she will not be going to Germany, unless they re-enlist or extend their remaining obligation. Hope that helps!

The wives and children will have concurrent travel orders with their soldier. This means that next summer, many households will be packed up and families will go together to the new post in Germany.

Although the Army made their choice in who is going where and what they will be called most families are somewhat uneasy about the move. Some family members may not go if they have medical conditions and then it becomes a hard ship tour is that right? So far that is what I am hearing at our FRG meeting. Being a military wife, you move where the army moves you. When you think about it you are married not just to your soldier but to the army as well. You are what we call an Army Wife. So whether you like it or not it is what it is. It's the Army and they are the Army of One. HOOAH!

I work intimately with the Stryker transformation initiative.
The only thing that has changed are the unit designations. Units that were slated to move will move, units that were slated to transform will transform.
1/25 will case its colors, assume 2 ACR's, and move to Germany.
3/1 AD will case its colors, assume 2ID lineage, and move to Lewis.
172nd will case its colors, assume 25th ID's, and return to Wainwright.

This has all been very confusing for most of us. So thank you everyone for your comments that have cleared up the confusion. I spoke w/ the housing director in Vilseck and he told me it will be a ghost town for about 9 months. They are building A LOT of new German-style townhouses for us, a new PX/Commissary mall, a new hospital, guest house, daycares, schools, and much more! They have received about $700 million dollars for these projects. I am happy about the move. Vilseck is a beautiful area (I went there for a volleyball game in high school). I am pretty sure there will be plenty to meet the needs of the EFMP families!
