MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - At least one Iraqi was killed and five wounded when two car bombs blew up almost simultaneously in the path of US military convoys in the northern city of Mosul, witnesses and a local hospital said.

The first car bomb detonated in the Al-Yarmuk neighbourhood on the city's westside and was heard at about 3:15 pm (1115 GMT) followed almost 15 mintues later by another car bomb in the Al-Mamoun neighbourhood to the southwest.

The Medical City Hospital said it received one dead person, his body completely blackened, and five wounded.

US troops were seen at the scene of the Yarmuk blast towing away a damaged armoured vehicle, while one of those wounded in the Mamoun attack, Salem Abdullah, 49, said the suicide car bomber blew himself up against a US military convoy.

There was no immediate US military confirmation. The attacks bring to six the number of car bombs in Mosul over the past week alone.
