SEATTLE -- As Fort Lewis welcomes its third Stryker brigade, school districts surrounding the post are gearing up for the influx of school-aged children expected to arrive with the soldiers.

More than 3,000 soldiers from the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment are relocating to the post 45 miles south of Seattle as part of the Army's plan to develop smaller, more independent and flexible combat units. [...]

Roughly 1,900 soldiers with the 2nd Cavalry Regiment have already settled in at Fort Lewis, mostly from Fort Polk, La. The remainder will be soldiers reassigned from other units across the country.

The regiment will become the post's third Stryker Brigade Combat Team, following the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, and the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, the latter now in Iraq.

Post officials plan an activation ceremony April 14 for the incoming regiment. The remaining transfers are expected to arrive by late September.
