Getty Images has about 60 photos taken in Tal Afar between late Dec. and Jan. 18th that I just discovered and don't believe we've posted. I must warn you that the first photos on the first page might be upsetting. They concern Iraqi civilians that were accidentally killed. Start here and scroll down to the bottom of the first page where you will begin seeing photos of 1-25 SBCT soldiers. Also look at pages 2 and 3. I believe these are photos of the 2-14 CAV, though only a few are identified as such.
Comments For "Tal Afar Photos":
I am very concerned about WHY these photos are being accesible from this website!! I was very upset at the photos and see ZERO reason for them to be posted! It does nothing positive for are military. The news media destroys their image enough so why must we do anything like show these photos to damage them anymore? It was a accident that those people were killed and that is a part of war! This is very disgusting and upsetting to me!! Lets just show the pictures of all the good things the soldiers are doing in Iraq!! Sincerly,A proud military Wife
I appreciate your comments. We actually linked to a first-person account of this incident written by the photographer a month or so ago. There are a number of other photos available at the link provided. Given the choice between not posting a link (denying people a chance to see the other photos), or posting a link with a warning, we decided to choose the latter approach.
Our goal at this site is to present all of the information we find, usually without commentary, and let people draw their own conclusions. What I took away from reading about the incident was a better understanding of the incredibly difficult and chaotic situations these soldiers are faced with everyday.
Erica, I posted this link because there are 60 photos here of Stryker Brigade soldiers doing their jobs in Tal Afar, a place that gets little coverage...not to further any attempt by the media to slam our troops. I felt the same as you about the first photos on this site but I felt it was important to get out the 60 good photos to those looking for their loved ones.
I appreciate having photos of our soldiers in Tal Afar posted here. This is the first time I have seen pictures from that location and it is the location of interest to me. Thanks for posting it.
I agree the pictures are bad, but when has war been good. I appreciate the pictures of this area also, because my son is a stryker driver with the 1/5 infantry of A Company. These soldiers are only doing their jobs, and sometimes it gets nasty, but not because they want it. Thanks for anything we can hear about these boys at this location. I think they are doing a good job in a country they know nothing about it at all. Thanks to all our troops, and God Bless them and the families.
Having just viewed the photos, my thoughts go in many directions. Most are of concern regarding the well-being of the children who lost their parents, their protectors, and their educators. They will face their own struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as will the young men who were faced with having to stop the vehicle filled with what they thought was hate, destruction and potential death.
In my view, this is not a pretty picture for all sides involved. There simply are no good pictures of war, especially when it takes place where innocents is concerned. Innocents on both sides.
May God grant peace and understanding, comfort and healing to wounds that war brings to all sides involvedspiritally, psychologically and physically.
