Army Pfc. Brandon Miller of Pascagoula was injured during a grenade attack Sunday as he helped maintain order during the historic elections in Mosul, Iraq.
Two other members of Miller's unit were also reportedly injured.
A 2003 graduate of Pascagoula High School, Miller, 20, and his unit attached to the 82nd Airborne were providing sniper cover for a polling site. At the end of the day while they were counting their munitions and equipment, a grenade was lobbed on top of the building they were on, his father, Tommy Miller of Pascagoula said.
Brandon Miller, who began his second tour of duty in Iraq in December, called his parents Monday from a hospital in Germany, where he was recovering from shrapnel wounds to both legs, his groin and face.
"He sounded like he was in pretty good spirits, but weak and in a lot of pain," said Tommy Miller, a retired chief petty officer with 24 years of service in the U.S. Navy.
Miller's mother, Carol, said "there's no explaining" how she felt after she got the initial call.
"It's the worst kind of call you could get, that your son's been injured in a war," she said. "You're all the way across the world and can't get to him."
Brandon Miller will be flown to Fort Bragg, N.C., where he will undergo surgery for his wounds. His mother plans to be there to greet him.
