Blackfive has some very important information regarding a piece of legislation that was recently introduced in Congress. The HEROES Act would increase survivor benefits for the families of those killed in Operations Iraqi & Enduring Freedom.
Comments For "The Heroes Act":
Lets all support this act. Our servicemen's family surely deserve this and more. My thanks to all.
My name is Diana McGee. My son (Darian "DJ" Jarsaan McGee) lost his
father,
USA - 2LT Richard Torres on Oct 6 2003 in Iraq. His father and I both
being
in the military, our lives and careers went into different directions
and
we lost contact. Richard eventually got married after the fact, but we
were
never able to locate eachother. In December of 2003, His only sibling,
Stewart Torres traveled to Clarksville, Tennessee (Austin Peay State
University) to speak at a memorial held for his Richard. The following
day,
I picked up the local paper and was able to contact Stewart. was waiting for me to contact him,
because he
was the only one, beside Richard that knew of Darian. Since that day,
Stewart and I have done everything i our power to prove paternity via a
DNA
(avuncular test - 96% match), affidavit etc...we are very close in
receiving a court appointment (2/3/05) from the state of Tennessee so
that
legally the courts recognize Darien as Richard's surviving son. That
being
said, we'll be able to amend my son's last name to Torres.
I would like to know what benefits would DJ be entitled as the sole
surviving child. Is this new bill to help raise the children these
fallen
hero's left behind?
I am sure I am not the only mother faced with this heartbreak, my son
is 5
an innocent little boy whose father gave his life to make sure that he
could grow up with rights and freedom things that so many don't have. I
support this bill 100% not only for my child but for the parent,
spouses
who lost there loved one and who is faced with everyday trials just
like I
am trying to raise my son the best way I know how. I was recently
Medically
discharged for injuries that I received in a previous deployment being
70%
disabled singIe parent I face everyday trials but I make it with the
grace
of God.
