ANNISTON, Ala. -- Officials celebrated the 1,000 Stryker to roll off the assembly lines on Wednesday.
The eight-wheeled armored vehicle has been changing the way warfare is conducted on the battlefield, and officials said the Stryker program is performing beyond their wildest expectations.
"The vehicle is performing better than we ever hoped. We have an operational readiness rate in theater of over 97 percent," said Don Howe, who works with the program.
The Stryker is built from ballistic steel and covered in ceramic armor. It carries 18 rounds of ammunition. The pride in this transport vehicle isn't just at the Anniston assembly plant, but on the battlefield as well.
"Their operational readiness is just exceedingly high. Soldiers like it, and it's doing a great job of protecting them and allowing them to move rapidly throughout the area," said Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions.
