[...] Meanwhile, in the midst of waging the global War on Terror, the Army not only continues to reorganize to meet the demands of the emerging strategic environment — it has increased the pace of innovation.

From a program to almost double the available number of combat brigades without drastically increasing personnel strength, to a restructuring that will make combat formations deadlier, swifter and more self-sustaining, this wartime Army's driving ahead with the most far-reaching reforms in half a century.

MOSUL, Iraq -- Lonely. Exhilarating. Frustrating. Exhausting. Rewarding. Serving in Iraq during the transition from war to sovereignty exposes me to many emotional experiences every day.

Although I joined the Army National Guard several years ago, this is my first active-duty mission. I feel adequately trained, yet training emphasizes a level of safety not found in a conflict zone. A publicly acceptable training program could never fully prepare me for dealing with people intent on extinguishing my life. I volunteered because I wanted to be part of creating the first Islamic democracy. I wanted to join reconstruction and humanitarian missions. Iraq gave me more than I bargained for.

The Stryker, the Army's new 19-ton combat vehicle, will make its island public debut Saturday in Waimea on the Big Island.

Two of the combat vehicles, the brainchild of retired Army Chief of Staff Eric Shinseki, were flown into Hickam Air Force Base on a C-17 cargo jet earlier this week from Fort Wainwright in Alaska and Fort Lewis in Washington, accompanied by two soldiers who operated the vehicle in Iraq.
