Update for 12/9/04

Dec- 9-2004 » Filed Under: Scott Thorne

Dear Friends,

Julie and I met up with Scott and Tiffany in time for the 9:30 a.m. meeting with the neuropsychologist. She wanted additional background information in order to prepare her report. She was interested in any previous brain injuries (there were none), how he did in school (we had the IEP's from 2nd to 10th Grades and Julie left those with her) and so on. At 10 a.m., Scott went to Speech Therapy while we continued with the meeting.

She said Scott did very well on some tests and some tests couldn't be administered due to his aphasia. Also, some tests are timed and this is a problem due to his having to write left-handed most of the time. I asked about the tests administered (since I did some of this as a graduate student) and feel confident it will be a solid evaluation. It may not be what we want to read, but it will be a good snap shot of where he is now.

Scott came back in about the time the meeting ended. We went down to the Occupational Therapy area together. Scott worked on putting golf balls (you need hand-eye coordination you know), going over menus and ordering food, payment after the meal and change making. He zapped some popcorn which we shared as all that menu work made him hungry.

We went back to the room for lunch. About the time we finished eating, Scott said we could take tomorrow and Saturday off. We weren't going to argue with him, of course, so we left before he went to Physical Therapy.

Juliie and I have been trying to be careful not to overtax Scott (as much as we enjoy his company, he's not here to entertain us) or cramp his relationship with Tiffany. One or the other of us has been with him daily since 9/22/04. I'm going to comply with his request and take some time away from the hospital. We'll see him on Sunday. If something comes up, we're still in the area and can get there quickly, if needed. What this means for you is you may not get another update until Sunday evening.

Kathy Thompson, who took Julie to the recent craft/quilting fair, took us to dinner this evening. Thanks again, Kathy, for a pleasant evening.

Speaking of snap shots, Todd has graciously added some more photos, including two of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry meeting and one of Scott with his brother, Dan, which was taken on 11/20/04. The knitted cap has "BULLETPROOF" sewn on it. Dan was trying to think of a gift for Scott (and we've all made the "he needs this like he needs a hole in his head" joke more than once) and this idea just jumped out at him.

One more week to go here!

The pictures are great! Love the hat! May, your week go smoothly and the trip home be fast.

My kids, use to have a game that you had to put the shapes in this board before the timer went out or it would shake, then pop all the pieces out.
Not sure but think was called Concentration. Everyone loved to play it, plus it would make the younger kids laugh when the timer would go off and it would blow the pieces back out of the game.
I can remember many adults would have fun with this and the kids would giggle at us when the timer would go out on us.

Anyhow, Best Wishes, for a Very Special Holiday Season.
