Update for 12/6/04

Dec- 6-2004 » Filed Under: Scott Thorne

Dear Friends,

When I arrived this morning, I learned that Scott was undergoing a neuropsychological evaluation. The only therapy he had was Occupational Therapy at 1 p.m. He worked on bolts, nuts and screws, but got frustrated with his right hand after about twenty minutes of working with it. He and the therapist then went to the kitchen area to work on some meal preparation skills.

It really doesn't do any additional good for him if you go too far past his frustration level. He's not throwing tools or anything (the therapist said that's a common reaction), but he stopped and looked at his right hand. We all know what that means, so it was good to change tasks.

Scott was unable to give me much detail on the tests administered during his evaluation, which is too bad since I probably used those tests as a graduate student. I'm just too curious aboout how he did, that's all.

When Scott got back from the second testing session, I goaded him into playing some Battleship. I figured he could use the occupational therapy of plugging in all those little pegs as well as the speech therapy of calling out the grid locations. Tiffany was soon helping Scott, so let's call it a team effort. I could tell when I missed because Scott would say, "You suck!" and grin. Hits were "that's gay." I told him, "No, say 'miss'" only to get "You suck!" and another grin.

When Julie and I had to leave for the evening, Scott was ahead on hits so I declared him the winner and told him to put the game away. ("Winner puts the game away" is a long standing rule at the Thorne residence.)
