ALBERT LEA, Minn. -- A soldier from Albert Lea was recovering at a stateside hospital Tuesday after being seriously wounded in Iraq.

Sgt. Scott Heilman, 36, is a paratrooper with the 194th Infantry Detachment of the Iowa Army National Guard based in Johnston, Iowa. He was stationed in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul when he was shot in the head by a sniper Friday.

After surgery in Iraq, he was taken to a military hospital in Germany, then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

His mother, Sue Heilman, spoke with him Sunday. [...]

Scott Heilman's mother, his wife, Kim, and their three children, Rylie, 12, Samantha, 10, and Aspen, 9, flew to Washington on Monday afternoon.

``We have a lot of family in town and we have our support system,'' Sue Heilman said. ``Everyone has been wonderful, kind and caring.''

My thoughts are with all of you. Thank Sgt. Scott Heilman for me he is another hero that has tried to keep America safe. God bless you all.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Sgt. Heilman and his family. May you have a full and speedy recovery. As I e-mail my son in Tal Afar I will tell you that you make us so proud to call ourselves Americans and live here on free soil. All of the men and women of our forces have a never ending job that puts them in harms way every day. God bless you, your family and all of our families and soldiers that are trying to help each other through this very difficult time.

Everyone in Spamtown have you in our prayers. Keep us posted.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family for a speedy recovery

Having been through something like this, I am available to talk with someone (and I do mean one, for now anyway) from the family if they need some help/advice.

Please know, Sgt Heilman, that you and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Do not dismiss it when people call you a hero... because you are! Godspeed!!!
