MOSUL, IRAQ (November 11, 2004) – In response to a request by Ninevah Provincial Governor, Duraid Kashmoula, Iraqi National Guard soldiers and Multi-National Forces from the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) initiated offensive operations in southeastern and southwestern Mosul at approximately 1 p.m. today against known concentrations of insurgents.
The Governor’s request resulted from a series of attacks on Iraqi Security Forces yesterday and overnight in Mosul. Insurgent forces attacked several police stations and other targets within the city. In several cases, Anti-Iraqi Forces exceeded the capabilities of the police on site, requiring reinforcements. Additionally, Governor Kashmoula is working with other regional governments to identify measures to restore and maintain a police presence in local police stations.
