Auburn’s 39th annual Veterans Day parade Saturday will be the first of several events over the next week to mark the holiday honoring America’s war veterans.
The parade, one of the largest in the nation, will feature 23 high school marching bands and floats from communities throughout Western Washington. This year’s parade will honor submarine veterans in particular.
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at E and Main streets in downtown Auburn and run west along Main Street to B Street Northwest. Marching bands will compete at 2 p.m. at the Auburn Memorial Stadium, 801 Fourth St. N.E.
Other Veterans Day observances include:
• The Walk of the Fallen memorial labyrinth will be open to the public today through Thursday. Cynthia Moore and Tom Thompson of Graham built the meditation walk in their back yard last year to honor U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.
More information about the labyrinth is on the couple’s Web site at tomcyn photoarts.com.

• Retired Lt. Gen. William Harrison and Patti Brown will be the keynote speakers at Puyallup’s annual Veterans Day celebration at 1 p.m. Sunday at Pioneer Park downtown.
Brown’s husband, Army Col. Bob Brown, is commanding the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, a Fort Lewis Stryker brigade, in Iraq.
The celebration will be followed by an open house at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2224, 120 2nd St. N.E.
• Mountain View Funeral Home and Memorial Park and the Barangay Community Services of Tacoma, a group serving Filipino war veterans in Tacoma, will hold their annual event at 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. S.W.
