Update 10/30

Oct-30-2004 » Filed Under: Scott Thorne

Dear Friends,

One addition to yesterday's report. Julie was photographed with Diana Ross and the Supremes at the post office here yesterday. Well, actually it was the three female clerks dressed like them. They were certainly not disgruntled, but very much enjoying themselves with the party decorations, the nice outfits and the music going all day.

Back to today.

The usual boring stuff at PT this morning, except that Scott was able to count the reps out loud for me (one to ten). PT was followed by movies in the afternoon and evening. Men in Black, Men in Black II, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. We ordered pizza for the last two movies. The only problem with that was Julie and I had to walk out to the front gate to meet the driver. It was a pleasant evening, so no big deal. Tiffany, Aly and Scott were on his bed which resembled a sofa more than a bed.

As we were about half-way through the last film, the Head Nurse from the ward came in to say good-bye and ask why we hadn't taken Scott's pictures off the wall yet. Uh, because you know something we don't? She had just come from Andrews AFB with four casualties (It's a duty thing for Head Nurses) and heard we were leaving tomorrow morning. We began to hustle around and get things finalized for departure. Dr. Neal (a Navy LT, I just learned,) and another neurologist had not seen the skull model so I discussed it with them. Dr. Neal volunteered that the Neurology guys were enthusiastically in support of Scott's Medical Board being put off for now. The exact quote was "Yes! Yes! Yes!"

Who am I to argue with a brain surgeon? Especially since he sees things the same way I do.

Dr. Neal and his colleague went in to wish Scott luck and see how he was doing. I gathered up my stuff and left as I needed to pack up and then return to Scott's room (because there's no way I could get over there at 0600 tomorrow for the departure).

As I understand it, we leave here at 0630 and head for Andrews AFB. We leave for Scott AFB (30 miles east of St. Louis, MO), change planes there for Minneapolis and arrive Tuesday. Maybe. There's no telling on these things, but I'm just happy we're on the way.

If there's an interruption to these updates, it will be because we're someplace without Internet access. I'll update the updates when we arrive, so don't worry about that.

(There's also a new photo of Scott in his Orange Glen football jersey.)

UPDATE: We had another visit from members of the 14th Cavalry Association, including another B Troop Commander. They wished Scott well and posed with him for photos. They are a great bunch of guys and very willing to help out where they can. Mike Oreo and Travis Majors were also visited by them. If anyone knows of any other 14th Cav troopers who are wounded and come to Walter Reed, please let them know by contacting them at www.14cav.org.
