A Monroe chef is planning to welcome home returning Stryker troops the best way he knows how – with a barbecue dinner for 5,000.

Konrad Haskins, the Northwest representative for a nationwide support-the-troops outfit called Operation BBQ, is soliciting donations and help for the big feed set for Nov. 22 at Fort Lewis.

The pre-Thanksgiving barbecue will follow a 2 p.m. welcome home ceremony for soldiers of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division – the Army’s first Stryker brigade – who are returning after nearly a year in Iraq.

Haskins said the Washington Beef Council helped secure 2,500 pounds of meat, courtesy of Tyson Foods Inc. and Washington Beef of Toppenish.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Amvets of Tacoma are making cash contributions, he said. Wicked Baking Co. of Monroe is providing brownies.

But they’re still looking for help with the soda and bottled water, ice cream and potato chips...

Now that 3-2 has returned, what are the plans for the military to move soldiers around and give those non-prior Stryker soldiers the great opportunity to serve in the Stryker BDE and those which deployed to be reassigned to a less intense unit? In other words, is the Army going to rotate soldiers in and out of Stryker units to ensure fair play and equal deployments across the board? The military has always had problems making things equal as to deployment lengths for all soldiers as some soldiers have never been deployed because the personnel management is not all perfect.

John, I agree with you. There needs to be a system in place that distributed equal deployment opportunities in the military. I know personally of some senior ranking soldiers that have never been deployed because of either who they knew or because they always managed to escape the system. Someone at the personnel command needs to look at this. Its not fair play if my spouse would deploy 6 months after a 12 month deployment. You say that cant be, but it is happening. Soldier gets reassigned and goes into a deploying unit and they might get some time before the deployment but eventuallu will deploy.

Not sure if the personnel folks will alow soldiers to separate or not, let alone be reassign to another installation but the last time I checked, soldiers in these types of units were stopped from such actions. Now that their deployments are over, will they let them proceed as original scheduled, such as separating or moving on? Not sure.

If the 1/25 FRG would please contact me at the website in the story I want to provide the same support to the 1/25 we are providing the 3/2.

Well I echo that it is not fair to redeploy them again after serving their one year term! We should have enough soliders to deploy without using the same soliders over and over. That will turn soliders to not want to reinlist. Let upper rank be deployed! Fair is Fair!Let's pray that this War in Iraq will come to a end soon!

Can't we just enjoy our reunions for a few days without everyone talking out about re-deployment? Welcome home 3-2 Stryker Brigade!

Hi I am a Mom of a 19 yr. old son who just got to Ft. Lewis two days ago. He just graduated from Ft. Benning, GA. He is in 2 Inf. 3rd Bridgade. Will he be deployed and if so how long?
