Update 10/22

Oct-22-2004 » Filed Under: Scott Thorne

Dear Friends,

Scott got a late start this morning. He got to PT a bit late, but did well. He worked the arm cycle and didn't spend much time looking at his right hand. It didn't slip off once. Scott did a few squats between the parallel bars but was concerned about his head and so stopped after a few reps. He went to a new exercise wherein he stepped onto a platform with one leg and then the other while standing between the bars. Coren Point (the PT) put the opposite foot on the same time Scott put his foot on to make it more like a game. I told them all they needed was a jump rope to make the game complete.

Scott probably still needs to use the ankle flexion orthotic, but he needs it less and less every day. While Scott was walking back and forth between the bars, his doctor and the doctor's supervisor came in to give me Scott's temporary profile. I was still suspicious, though, as it seemed too easy. Scott was given the task of giving Latonya (the OT) a piece of paper from one pigeon hole they use for storing forms in the shop. He had some trouble doing this, but eventually got it right. He then had to walk his index and middle fingers up and down the holes several times.

After PT, we went to speech therapy, which lasted about an hour. Scott was reported to be doing very well and making good progress in some areas, but running into blocks at others. She shifted to an area where Scott could enjoy success when he hit a block. She told me it's just how your brain sorts itself out.

We took Scott down to Subway again for dinner and then watched some TV in his room while we ate. After he finished I set up Age of Empires (a computer game) to see how he would do with the mouse and the visual stimulation. He enjoyed himself, but part of being in his situation is you fatigue easily at times. Since he looked pretty sleepy, Julie and I left for the evening. We also wanted him to have some "family" time with Tiffany and Alyson.

(Steve also added a 30 second video to his album of Scott walking at PT last week. It's a 2+ MB file, so dial-up users be warned.)
