TUMWATER -- Kindergarteners and third-graders at Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School spent hours in the spring collecting toiletries and munchies to send to soldiers serving in Iraq.

Some students wrote a letter; others wrote four or five. Many parents donated money to cover the postage.

The effort was personal.

There are several students at Peter G. Schmidt whose parents are in Iraq.

And the letters and goodies went to Maj. Brad Dillonaire and his soldiers. His daughter, Victoria, 6, and son, Michael, 10, attend Peter G. Schmidt.

The students' message was simply, thank you. [...]

On Tuesday afternoon, Dillonaire visited the school to return the sentiment.

"They took the time to send me a thank-you note; it's the least I can do to take time out and say thank-you back," said Dillonaire, who has been on a two-week leave and will begin his journey back to Iraq tonight.
