Fields Of White Roses

My friend Marcel, who is a Vietnam veteran, penned the following poem for us as a tribute to fallen soldiers. Thanks for these moving words Marcel.

Fields Of White Roses

I see a vast field of white flowers.
I hope they are fragrant to my nose.
As I bring my car around to the front
I realize this is not a field of flowers
But a sea of white stone markers of the
Fallen of all our wars.

Fallen flowers in their own right.
Fallen flowers who took up the fight.
Brave rose petals of man.
Salute these flowers as best we can.

I was a soldier and will one day be..
One of these flowers..and proudly, you see.
I fought for our cause..respected our laws..
Followed my orders with nary a whine.
And marched off quite smartly
To a wartime front line.

I was a lucky one..came back alive.
Some became roses...my best friends made five.
Why do we pluck our best flowers,
Before they are prime?
We always have done this, over mans' time.

So many white roses, row after row,
Attest to the courage, each mother does show,
As she gives her best flower to add to the rest..
Salutes to the mothers..they give up their best.

Some day, in the future, I hope we will see
These fields of white roses fade into memory.
And new flowers of peace wave gaily, for good..
Where the rows of brave roses had gallantly stood.
