REDMOND -- It may look like just another car wash, a flurry of soapy water gliding over the hoods, doors and trunks of automobiles outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall here Sunday.

But Seattle-area veterans who belong to Lake Washington Post No. 2995 and family members of military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan hope their brawn will produce much more than shiny automobiles.

They hope their energy will raise dollars to send "comfort" goods to troops and relatives who are stationed in those two countries.

The goods, organizers hope, will remind loved ones of the Pacific Northwest -- items such as packaged salmon and Mount Rainier postcards as well as toiletries, food, writing materials and medicine.

About 40 people, including veterans and family members of military personnel, will be washing, scrubbing and drying for at least four hours at this Eastside fund-raiser, according to organizer Steve Turley, a 58-year-old Kirkland resident.

"It's representative of, 'Hey, we're still behind you,' " said Turley, a VFW hall member here. "We're not trying to take the place of military supply. We're sending things like trail mix." [...]

He also contacted Susan Sutter, whose 20-year-old son, Army Spc. Jake Herring, died in April, and asked for advice about what to send.

He said Sutter had been sending care packages to her son in Iraq, and she forwarded fund-raiser organizers a list of needed items. Kenny read about Herring, who lived in Kirkland, in the media. [...]

The car wash fund-raiser will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall at 4330 148th Ave. N.E., Redmond. People can donate any amount for a washed car. For information about the wash or to donate, call 425-488-8887 or 425-883-2995.
