MOSUL, Iraq – Two years ago, Spc. Brian Weinberger was attending high school in Park Falls, Wis., playing football and wrestling.
When Weinberger, the son of Don and Chris Weinberger of Park Falls, assessed his future after high school, he chose a path that would challenge his physical and mental abilities. He decided to become a U.S. Army infantry Soldier.
Upon graduating basic and advanced individual training, Weinberger was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) based out of Fort Lewis, Wash. Weinberger is currently stationed in Mosul, Iraq, where he patrols the streets, raids homes of suspected terrorists and works with Iraqi Security Forces to increase the stability and security of Iraq.
As one of the first Soldiers to utilize the Army’s Stryker, an eight-wheeled armored vehicle, Weinberger is a member of third platoon’s weapons squad. In his arsenal, Weinberger is assigned a 9mm handgun, an M4 rifle and an M240B, a 20-plus pound machine gun.
“As a weapons squad, our job is to lay down heavy fire on the enemy,” Weinberger said.
His leaders refer to Weinberger as a tough, strong guy who’s earned the respect of his fellow Soldiers just by doing his job.
“Weinberger is a quiet professional who gets the job done,” said 1st Sgt. Stan Sobiech, first sergeant for Company C, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment. “The guys trust him. They know that if they’re in a bind, they can count on Weinberger to get them out.”
