MOSUL, IRAQ (September 2, 2004) – The Mosul Police Department can better protect the citizens of Mosul after being handed the keys to over $175,000 worth of new vehicles in a brief ceremony at the Mosul Palace on September 1.

Four new trucks were given to the local police to replace vehicles destroyed when a car bomb exploded in front of the Somer Police Station in southeastern Mosul on Aug 1. The police use the flat-bed trucks to move large numbers of officers to incidents at one time.

In addition to the new flat-bed trucks, Iraqi Police also received 10 brand new motorcycles that will be used to patrol the crowded Mosul streets. Using the new motorcycles will make it easier for police to quickly negotiate traffic and narrow streets and alleyways.

“The streets of Mosul are very crowded with cars and people,” said Mohammed Barhowie, Chief of Ninevah Province Police. “The new motorcycles will allow us to do our job in a more efficient way.”

The new vehicles, provided by Multinational Forces, are a part of an ongoing effort by MNF and Iraqi Security Forces to identify equipment that is needed to increase security for the region.

Increased security remains a top priority for the citizens of the Ninevah Province , Iraqi Security Forces and the Multinational Forces.
