MOSUL, IRAQ (August 23, 2004) – Following a demonstration of the skills learned over the last three months, 22 civil defense firefighting graduates accepted their diplomas with great pride as they prepare to put their training to the test.

These 22 graduates will become trainers to the more then 650 civil defense members throughout the Ninevah Province , who will then make up the backbone of firefighting in the communities throughout the river valley.

The training, which took place at Mosul ’s Public Safety Academy , included new fire fighting techniques and training on over $500,000 worth of newly purchased equipment, funded through the Commanders Emergency Relief Program. The training was conducted by the 416th Civil Affairs Battalion, Public Safety Team, from Norristown , Pa. and the 268th Engineer Detachment (Firefighters) from Columbia , S.C.

Before the graduation ceremony, the firefighters demonstrated the hydraulic extraction equipment, their interior firefighting skills and how the snorkel truck is useful to put out fires in high places. The snorkel truck is a fire water truck with a platform lift able to elevate personnel and water support up to 60 feet in the air.

“This training is critical to the education of the Ninevah civil defense firefighters so they are ready to protect the area against fires and other hazards,” said Brigadier Mohammed, Director of Ninevah Province civil defense. “I look forward to great things after seeing such an excellent display of skill.”

Other skills learned throughout the course, but not demonstrated, were Enhanced Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), advanced first aid, aerial rescues, vehicle rescues and communications.

The skills learned by these firefighter trainers will be passed to the civil defense firefighting community, increasing safety for the agricultural and urban communities within the Ninevah Province .
