A 24-year-old Longview soldier, who was injured in Iraq on Wednesday when his assault vehicle tumbled over a cliff, was expected to leave Germany for Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., this morning, his father said.
Sgt. Justin Little suffered a broken neck, but did not damage his spinal cord, meaning he likely will walk again, Jim Little said. He was recovering Friday in a German military hospital.
Jim Little, who spoke with his son by telephone Friday morning, said he was "very drugged" and in "a lot of pain." However, "he sounded like he was happy to be where he was and very upbeat."
Officials plan to move Sgt. Little from Washington, D.C., to Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma in a few days, said Jim Little, a Longview insurance agent.
"They want to get him as close to home as possible," he said.
Little, who graduated from Mark Morris High School in 1999, was riding aboard an Army Stryker assault vehicle near the Syrian border around 11:30 p.m. when it tumbled over a 30-foot cliff, his family said.
Details about how the accident happened are sketchy, and neither the Army, nor the U.S. Central Command in Baghdad, Iraq, could provide information Friday evening.
The vehicle had been involved in a firefight Wednesday night and was moving out of the area, Jim Little said.
