MOSUL, IRAQ (August 8, 2004) – In addition to providing the citizens of Ninevah Province with more than 10,000 jobs, the Rapid Regional Response Program (R3P) has completed almost $2 million in educational, recreational, and developmental improvement projects.

The $14 million R3P is funded by the Developmental Funds for Iraq account and the Commander’s Emergency Response Program fund. The projects that received money through the R3P were identified and selected by the former Coalition Provisional Authority in partnership with local leaders in the Ninevah province.

Last fall projects were identified and local contractors made bids to complete the projects. Between December 2003 and June 2004, 50 local contractors were awarded various projects in the Ninevah region, creating thousands of new jobs.

Mosul received about $850,000 for developmental projects within the city. The projects include graffiti removal, various road construction and repair projects, orphanage renovation and the construction of road and traffic signs throughout the city.

Completed educational projects made up another part of the total funding at $290,000. Multinational forces helped rebuild and repair schools and colleges in the Ninevah region. Some of these projects included repairs and renovations to the Tal-Abta School and the Al Taqafia School. A new public library and new library for the University of Agriculture College were also constructed.

The construction of a soccer stadium and the Shuhada Park were the two projects completed as a part of the recreational R3P funding. These projects, at a total cost of $190,000, concentrated on providing the youth of Ninevah Province a fun, safe recreation area.

The remaining $12 million in R3P projects are scheduled to be completed within the next five months. They include various developmental and educational projects that will directly benefit the lives of the citizens of Ninevah Province, such as continued road construction and repair projects, bus transportation upgrades, purchase of waste removal trucks, the completion of the Mosul Environmental Testing Station and various other projects.

Local leaders, working with local contractors employing thousands of local workers, are using the R3P funds to improve the quality of life for the people of northern Iraq.
