Broken Arrow Family Gets Opporunity To See And Speak To Son In Iraq

Tulsa - Since coalition forces moved into Iraq, nearly nine hundred of our U.S. soldiers have died. But, the news out of Iraq is not always bleak. NewsChannel 8 was able to help a Broken Arrow family see and speak to their son live from Mosul, Iraq.

Private First Class Paul Sperry has been in Iraq since his last trip home in March. His father Jack and brother Mark joined NewsChannel 8's Keith Taylor in our studios Tuesday morning, not knowing they would have the chance to talk with him.

"There's Paul," said Jack Sperry. "You knew this was going on didn't you?"

Paul's father and brother Mark were surprised to find they could actually talk to him live, through a special fiberoptic link.

"So, are you doing alright, son?," Jack asked.
"Doing fine, doing fine," said Paul. "Just ready to come home."

When he returns home, Paul says he'll never complain about Oklahoma's summer again.

"This makes Oklahoma feel like Alaska," he said.

In addition to leading convoys and manning checkpoints, Sperry's Stryker unit also performs house to house searches. That puts a lot of stress on his family, especially his mother, who was unable to make it to our studios.

"I'd tell her I love you mom, don't worry, everything's going to be okay and I'll be home soon," Paul said.

"Son, be safe and I love you," Jack Sperry said. "I love you too, dad," Paul added.
