MOSUL, IRAQ (June 28, 2004) – Iraqi Security Forces and soldiers from 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) detained 27 individuals wanted for anti-Iraqi forces activities and collected numerous weapons and munitions in the past 24 hours.
Iraqi police and Coalition soldiers stopped and searched two vehicles yesterday in the neighborhood of Al Aktissdyeen. Iraqi police searched the vehicles and collected one machine gun, a pistol, two AK-47s, three hand grenades, assorted fuses and various ID cards. The suspects are in custody and no officers or soldiers were injured during the search.
Iraqi police operating a traffic control point near the neighborhood of Al Wahda came under small arms and rocket propelled grenade attack by terrorists yesterday. Soldiers from the Iraqi National Guard responded to the scene and secured the building the terrorists were occupying. One suspect is in custody. Coalition forces responded to the scene and reported Iraqi police and soldiers had the situation under control. No injuries were reported.
Soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment conducted a cordon and search today in the neighborhood of Al Karama for individuals leading an anti-Iraqi forces terrorist cell suspected of carrying out attacks against a hospital and hotel. One individual was identified and is in custody. No soldiers were injured during the search.
Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment conducted nine cordon and knock searches in various locations throughout Mosul today in search of members of a terrorist cell wanted for anti-Iraqi forces activities. Ten individuals are in custody and no injuries were reported.
As of today, there are two days until the transfer of Iraq’s sovereignty to the Iraqi people. Iraqi security forces, government officials, Coalition forces and the people of northern Iraq will continue to work together to demonstrate to the rest of the world that Mosul is different.
