KIRKLAND-- In tribute to fallen Army Sgt. Jacob Herring, family and friends are creating care packages to send to his platoon still stationed in Iraq.
Herring, 21, a 2001 graduate of Lake Washington High School and sergeant in the Fort Lewis-based Stryker Brigade, died April 28 after his vehicle was attacked near Mosul, Iraq.
Herring's mother, Susan Sutter of Kirkland, suggested care packages as a way to recognize her son's platoon.
``For soldiers stationed in Iraq, a package filled with goodies is like a treasure box filled with gold,'' said Cherie Myers, Safeway's public affairs director.
Donations will be collected from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 3 at the Rose Hill Safeway, 12519 N.E. 85th St.
Safeway is donating the cost of shipping to send the care packages overseas. A list of preferred items will be available from a volunteer at Safeway during the donation period.
