MOSUL, IRAQ (June 24, 2004) – Ambassador Paul Bremer visited Mosul Wednesday to say farewell to the citizens of Ninevah Province and to assure them that the partnership between the Iraqi people and the Coalition forces will carry on after the transfer of sovereignty June 30.
“The reconstruction of the Ninevah Province is a priority of the Coalition, and this partnership will continue through economic reconstruction and security efforts for Ninevah,” he said.
Governor Osama Kashmoula thanked Bremer for his efforts from the start of the whole operation and said Ninevah is in much better shape than the rest of the provinces.
Vice Governor Khisro Goran said, “Of all that you have given us, the most valuable thing you have given us is our freedom. In spite of recent actions by the enemy, our state is democratic and free.”
Bremer noted that Mosul has changed remarkably in the 13 months since he last visited the city. At that time there was not a single police officer on duty; today there are more than 8,000. A year ago there was no commercial activity; today retail stores hardly keep up with demand.
“Governor, as I bid farewell, I wish you and the Provincial Council the best. I’m optimistic about the future of the Ninevah Province and Iraq,” Bremer said.
